Why is the Playstation Move motion controller better than the Wii remote?
22 August, 2010 - Without doubt the Wii remote has revolutionised gaming and it won' t be long now until millions of PS3 owners can take delivery of the Playstation Move and experience what Wii owners have had for a long time. So how does the Playstation MOVE motion controller eclipse the Wii remote and what can we expect?
1. Move button - with the movement of the arms being such an integral part of using the controller it is better to have one big button, making it easier for anyone to understand and press.
2. Easy to Hold - the concave shape fits snugly in your hand, while at the same time providing a firm grip.
3. Rethinking game design - developer needs to throw away a conventional wisdom of how gamers use a controller and instead consider what will provide the most immersive experience and make players feel a direct connection with the game.
4. Improve game interaction - the high fidelity of motion recognition and real time response are the key for the success of any motion based game input device, and the controller surpasses in these areas anything that is available in the market either at present or later in 2010.
5. Precision - recognising a player's motion, the 3D location and orientation of the controller, the response time that is as good as DUALSHOCK 3, the camera and audio input that allows Augmented Reality games as well as introducing a player's image and voice into the game
6. Wider appeal - PlayStation 3 will become more accessible to wider audiences, from small kids to even your grandmother.
September the 16th cannot arrive quick enough.
One month until the launch of MOVE
16 August, 2010 - It is now one month until the release of the highly anticipated Playstation MOVE and PS3 owners cannot wait. Sony has introduced some great technology this year to enhance the PS3 and hopefully make it the centre of your home entertainment unit. The MOVE is another string in the PS3 bow and if you haven't seen any of the footage from the E3 Conference, you can check it out at You Tube.
The MOVE Motion Controller has been compared to the Wii Remote, but those similarities stop once you start playing. Sony promises the Motion Controller to be the most responsive controller on the market, but the big difference will be the high definition graphics.
HD graphics represent a big step forward in motion gaming and first impressions are funnily enough, impressive. Fingers crossed that Playstation MOVE plays as good as it looks.
MOVE History
With the popularity of motion sensing technology steadily increasing, Sony felt the need to create a system worthy of challenging competitors like Microsoft and Nintendo. The newest addition to Sony’s already extensive line of products is called: the PlayStation Move. Many excited gamers eagerly await its release on the 16th September.
After much speculation, Sony finally announced its newest gaming system, which was described by Sony’s engineers as a "platform" and a "virtual console launch.” It seems that Sony is quite serious about leaving its mark later this year when the product will be officially released.
With Sony’s notorious determination and hunger for success, it should be interesting to see who, in the end, will take the upper hand in this fierce three-way battle. Will the crown be in the Nintendo Wii or Microsoft's Natal’s reach, or will Sony indeed blow its competitors away with its PlayStation Move, and become the undisputable living room gaming champion?
Anyone familiar with the Wii will understand the most basic concept of the motion controller system incorporated into the PlayStation Move. Sensors detect the player's movements and then translate them into actions on the display screen. Although similar in game-play, Move can track its controller precisely within real 3D parameters, where as the Wii system relies on detecting movement relative to previous positions. Instant conversion of complete and full movement eliminates annoying action delays on the screen. As a result, every game will feel absolutely real.
A camera is necessary to accurately and quickly transform every move a player makes. Fortunately, Sony already had launched the ‘PlayStation Eye,’ a camera system that was deemed to be quite useful when the plans for the Move were created. Actually, the Move design is based on what the Eye can detect when those charming colored balls at the end of each Move controller have been activated. They let the PlayStation know the controller’s position in respect to the camera.
The black plastic, cylindrical shaped Move controller has a strange appearance. It resembles a miniature wireless microphone, with a ping pong ball on the top. Despite its odd look, this gadget has a perfect weight and balance. It sits comfortably in your hand and, actually, feels significantly lighter than a Wiimote. This is an absolute bonus for those avid gamers, who like to play for hours at a time.
Based on Bluetooth technology, all Move controllers are wireless. They run on a rechargeable battery, instead of AA batteries. Would that cause the favorable weight difference?
The Move’s ‘sub-controller’ is a much more limited, despite being more complicated in structure than, for instance, the Wii’s Nunchuk. The sub-controller has far more buttons, but no motion sensors. There is no rumble either.
PlayStation Move based games are starting to line up. They comprise imaginative games for kids, dynamic experiences for the keen gamers, energetic sports activities for those who like to stay active and party favorites that can be enjoyed by the entire family. Featured PlayStation Move game titles include ‘Motion Fighter,’ ‘Move Party,’ ‘Sports Champion,’ ‘The Shoot,’ Brunswick Pro Bowling,’ and ‘TV Superstars.’ While some games were designed especially for the Move, and its fabulous motion sensing abilities, others like ‘EyePet, ‘SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy Seals,’ and ‘Disney Pixar: Toy Story 3’ are also compatible with wireless SIXAXIS and DUALSHOCK 3 controllers.
